JIMTOWN -- Derek Yoder, have yourself a day!
The NorthWood junior center fielder and lead-off hitter put up some head-turning numbers Thursday as the Panthers outslugged Jimtown 18-10 Thursday in an eight-inning high school baseball victory at wind-swept Booster Field.
Yoder hit the first pitch of the game for a home run, then added a two-run shot in the fourth inning and three-run blast in the fifth inning.
He reached base in each of his six plate appearances.
Besides the three homers (bringing his 2010 season total to four), he rapped a single and was intentionally walked twice. Yoder drove in five runs, scored five runs and stole three bases.
"I saw that first pitch and put a good swing on it and it happened to go over the fence," said Yoder of the first long ball. "On the second, I was sitting back and got a hanging curveball. We had the hit-and-run on, so I was just trying to make contact (on a 1-0 pitch). On the last one, I was just trying to help the team out (and launched another 1-0 pitch)."
NorthWood coach Nick Davis said his Panthers (7-5) have been hitting the ball well in recent games by getting ahead and ripping the ball.
"We've gotten into counts where we could be aggressive with the bat," said Davis after watching his team lash out 17 hits, including four homers (junior Blair Beehler cracked a solo shot in the seventh) and three doubles. "On a (windy) night like tonight, it didn't take too much to get it out."
The Jimmies (7-5) sent the game into extra innings with clutch hitting. Senior Jordan Smith's two-run single on an 0-2 count in the seventh inning forged a 10-10 tie.
NorthWood then broke the game open with an eight-run eighth.
"We had a chance and couldn't get the winning run in the seventh," said Jimtown coach Mike Stout, whose team stranded 10 runners, including one at second base in the seventh. "I'm a baseball fan and that was fun to watch. We just couldn't keep the ball in the yard."
Jimtown sophomore Brandon Weinkauf, who began the season on the junior varsity, drove in four runs and socked a three-run homer, his first varsity circuit clout.
Besides all the offensive fireworks, the Panthers also performed on defense with senior third baseman Tony Miranda and junior shortstop Kyle Heckaman coming up with several solid players. NorthWood turned double plays in each of the first two frames. Jimtown also turned one in the first.
Junior Cory Snyder started on the mound and when he went to right field, he made a play against the fence that robbed Jimtown senior Derek Kelley of what would have been at least two runs batted in.

GOSHEN -- The spring game is producing scores more conducive to the fall.
"You didn't know you were going to see a football game did you?" asked Concord baseball coach Mike Jackowiak after the Minutemen's Northern Lakes Conference loss to Goshen by a football-like score of 14-13 at Phend Field.
In a game that featured 29 hits and four home runs, the Redskins (7-8, 3-2) prevailed with five unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
With two outs, Jon Swihart smacked a 3-2 pitch to center field to plate the tying and game-winning runs.
His teammates came away calling him "Johnny Clutch."
Goshen coach Hal Farmwald explained the approach he wants his hitters to have in those kinds of situations.
"We try to get into positive (hitter-friendly ball-strike) counts and then look for a ball in a zone where we can hit it," said Farmwald. "Jon has been much better the last two or three weeks and about going with the pitch. You saw there that he hit it to right-center."
The Goshen rally featured three hits, including infield singles by Brad Taylor and Taylor Short. There were also two Concord fielding errors and a run-allowing wild pitch.
Reliever Alex Stiver (1-0) took the mound loss and also bashed a seventh-inning solo homer.
Jackowiak lamented his team's giving "extra outs" but was pleased with the Minutemen's potent offense.
"We've been hitting the ball all year," said Jackowiak. "We need to put seven complete innings together. When we do that, we're going to be awful tough."
Doug Acker drove in four runs for the Minutemen (4-7, 0-5) with a single and his first two home runs of the 2010 season. Both homers went over the right field wall, where it is marked at 300 feet down the line. Acker socked an 0-1 pitch to lead off the second inning and belted a 3-1 offering for a two-run shot in the sixth.
"We knew Concord was a good-hitting team and that they were going to have to score a lot of runs and we were going to have to score with them," said Farmwald.
Jake Speicher bashed a three-run home run to left-center field to highlight a five-run Goshen uprising in the fourth inning.
Short and Carl Kay scored three runs each for the Redskins. Kay (1-0), the last of four pitchers used by Farmwald Wednesday, was the winner thanks to the bottom-of-the-seventh Redskin rally.
